What Makes Borough Market, Bankside, and Southwark Special

South of the Thames, this stretch of London tells a story that runs from medieval markets to modern culture, all connected by the river and a food scene that ranks among the city’s finest.

Borough Market is London’s most celebrated food destination. Trading for over a thousand years, this covered market overflows with artisan cheeses, freshly baked sourdough, cured meats, and street food from every corner of the globe. Whether you’re sampling a warm raclette sandwich, browsing jars of local honey, or sipping natural wine between the stalls, every visit feels like a celebration of quality ingredients and the people passionate about them.

Bankside, stretching along the river from the Tate Modern to Shakespeare’s Globe, pairs world-class culture with a thriving dining scene. Its converted warehouses and riverside walkways are home to stylish restaurants, craft breweries, and terrace bars with sweeping views of St Paul’s Cathedral — the perfect spot where a long lunch blends seamlessly into an afternoon of art and exploration.

Southwark, the historic backbone of the area, adds depth and grit to the mix. Its ancient coaching inns, hidden courtyards, and backstreet pubs have served locals for centuries. From hearty pie-and-mash shops to modern South Asian kitchens, Southwark’s food reflects the honest, ever-evolving character of one of London’s oldest and most storied neighborhoods.
