Why Oltrarno Is a Unique Neighborhood

If there’s one neighborhood I just can’t get enough of in Florence, it’s Oltrarno. Seriously, there’s something magical about this place.

Think Renaissance palaces, tiny historic alleyways, and lively piazzas around every corner; it’s truly special. And when you remember that Oltrarno, Florence, has been home to artisan workshops for centuries, still carrying on those old traditions, it just makes the whole place even more impressive.

I always tell people that if you want to experience the real Florentine atmosphere, Oltrarno is the place to go. It gives you a glimpse of everyday local life and traditions. You’ll smell incredible aromas drifting out of the trattorias serving classic Florence foods, hear the sounds of artisans at work in their studios, and see crowds of people weaving through the busy squares.

Santo Spirito and San Frediano are two of the area’s famous churches, where visitors can experience a mix of art, local traditions, and beautiful architecture.

San Miniato al Monte is a stunning basilica with a picturesque hillside location that has one of the best viewpoints in Florence.

Ponte Vecchio and Ponte Santa Trinita are two of Florence’s most iconic bridges, known for their intricate designs and the abundance of jewelry shops.

Villa Bardini overlooks all of Florence and features a wealth of serene gardens, while the Porcelain Museum houses a massive collection of porcelain that once belonged to the Medici family.

This is Florence, after all, so food naturally plays a big role, and Oltrarno is no exception. Don’t forget to consider Airbnbs or other serviced apartments that can be excellent value, especially when traveling with a group. Sometimes, you can even pick up some good deals by finding properties on Google Maps and messaging them directly yourself.

Events and Cultural Activities

There’s always something going on in Oltrarno. Between open-air markets like the Santo Spirito Market and the special religious events that take place at the Basilica di Santo Spirito, you can bet there will be some action when you’re there.

The deeper you go into Oltrarno, Florence, the more hidden gems you’ll discover. Small local shops, quiet courtyards, and artisan studios seem to pop up around every corner, especially in San Niccolò or San Frediano. Stop for a glass of wine at one of the many wine bars, like Il Santo Vino, for a tasting in a relaxed atmosphere.

If you’re after great views, Boboli Gardens and Villa Bardini are fantastic places to see Florence from above.
