"I highly recommend this food tour for anyone looking to visit Amsterdam. First, the food was delicious, and we were stuffed by the end. Second, our guide Jacob was friendly, personable and knowledgeable. Lastly, the boat portion of the tour was a great bonus, as we only had a short time to visit the city and were able to see the city from the water as well. 10/10!

What Makes Jordaan Special
Jordaan is Amsterdam’s most charming neighborhood and a true local favorite. Once a working-class quarter built in the 17th century, it has transformed into one of the city’s most sought-after areas, known for its picturesque canals, hidden courtyards (hofjes), and a creative spirit that blends old-world character with a modern edge.
Food is at the heart of Jordaan’s identity. The neighborhood is famous for its traditional Dutch treats — from crispy bitterballen and perfectly aged Gouda to the country’s best apple pie — alongside a rich multicultural food scene shaped by Surinamese, Indonesian, and other international influences. Family-run eateries, independent cheese shops, and cozy brown cafés line the canal-side streets, offering a taste of Amsterdam that is authentic, diverse, and impossible to find in the tourist center.

Fun and tasty way to explore This was a well-paced way to taste and see the city! We had a lovely time and were delighted by the foods & boat. Our guide, Gerard, was great at making us feel welcome and introducing us to both the history & tastes of the city. He did a really superb job adapting to our group’s energy and made it feel like a highly personalized experience. The food itself was excellent—delicious savory foods in particular, though every location was a hit for us. We had limited time to see the city and this tour allowed us to cover a lot of the personality and flavor, both literal and figurative, without feeling rushed or overwhelming. Definitely would recommend Gerard and the experience!

We had a great experience on the Jordaan Food Tour which was led by Danielle who was so passionate & enthusiastic that the love for her town really shone through. Not only did she convey the origin of the foods we sampled, but she also explained the history & architecture of Amsterdam & the Jordaan neighborhood as we walked along. The group is kept small so it was easy to hear her as she walked us through the neighborhood. Some stops were a little lengthier in time allowing us time to sit down & rest weary bones while getting to know others in the group.
The company running the tour is set up well. The website is informative & easy to navigate & tickets can be downloaded to Google Wallet. Thorough communication is sent via email & text. As a matter-of-fact, the day before our tour, I got a text asking if I was able to reschedule to an earlier time. The entire conversation only took a few messages to get everything squared away before the new tickets were available for download.
All in all, a great experience that encourages me to use "Eating Europe" at future destinations. Their 5-star rating is well deserved! Kudos!

Jacopo was a fantastic guide. We enjoyed the information he gave us on Amsterdam and our food stops. The food stops were excellent with a nice pace. We started with small appetizer samples Bittenballen, wine and cheese, pickled herring, and kibbling .. then progressed to more entree’ samples Chicken Satay and Pita Kapsalon. We ended with the best Dutch Apple Pie. It was a full meal, we had no need for dinner after. I do food tours in every new country I visit and this was one of the best! I highly recommend Eating Europe Food Tours.

Our tour was led by Stephanie Smook. Great experience and food. It was lovely walking into each brown pub, shop, or cafe and seeing the immediate warmth between the owner/staff and our guide. The history was insightful. The walking was the right amount. The food was fantastic. You don’t need to be a foodie, just open to trying quality local traditional food away from the tourist traps. Stephanie was outgoing, energetic, and made everyone feel comfortable, and curious.

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the tour we took with Danielle. She is a hoot! We love the establishments she chose and that she was able to ensure we (both vegetarians) had options. At one place they made us vegetarian bitterballen, which was something I did not know could be done and a very pleasant surprise! Otherwise, we had apple pie, canelés, cheese and soup. All were delicious, with the canelés being outstanding. We also learned some Dutch history and culture, and had plenty of opportunities to ask questions. Highly recommend this tour!

Our Amsterdam food tours are led by people who know this city through its markets, its kitchens, and its centuries of trade. They know which stall has the best herring, where to find a bruin café that still pours the way it did decades ago, and which neighborhood spot serves food shaped by every culture that's called this city home. They take you past the canals and into the Amsterdam that locals actually live.

My favourite spot for Dutch pancakes is restaurant Upstairs on the Grimburgwal. Cheese, bacon and syrup are the holy trinity!
Exploring the historical Jewish quarter to the east of the city center, with the old Portuguese synagogue, Rembrandt's house and the Resistance Museum is a great way to learn about a lesser-known side of Amsterdam's history and culture.
Frequently Asked Questions
General Tour Information
Is a food tour in Amsterdam worth it?
Absolutely! There’s no better way to experience the beautiful city of Amsterdam and its culture than a food tour with a local guide.
What food is Amsterdam famous for?
Amsterdam’s culinary scene is a flavorful mix of Dutch tradition and international influences that reflect the city’s diverse culture. You can’t leave without trying stroopwafels (thin caramel-filled waffles), bitterballen (crispy meat croquettes served with mustard), and haring (raw herring served with onions and pickles). For something heartier, try stamppot (mashed potatoes with vegetables and sausage) or poffertjes (fluffy mini pancakes dusted with powdered sugar). And of course, no visit is complete without sampling some of the Netherlands’ world-famous Dutch cheeses, from Gouda to Edam.
What’s included in the price of the food tour?
All food and drinks, as well as your professional local guide are included in the price you pay for the tour. No hidden charges or upsells here.
How long are the tours?
Our Amsterdam tours range in length from 3 to 3.5 hours.
What neighborhoods or areas do the tours cover?
Each tour’s area can be found listed as its “location”. For example, you might explore Jordaan or De Pijp!
What is the group size?
Our tours have maximum capacities of between 11-12 guests. This ensures that our small groups are able to move unobtrusively through the neighborhoods we explore, respecting our surroundings and the locals that live in Amsterdam.
I’m traveling alone. Do you offer single tickets?
We love welcoming solo travelers! All of our tours are open to individual guests.

What kind of food will we taste?
You will explore Dutch and regional foods, tasting Amsterdam’s culinary culture from hearty local dishes to modern, international influences. Offerings may vary by day or season, but you’re sure to enjoy a delightful array of local flavors!
Are drinks included?
Yes. All tours include drinks, and they’re always included in the price you pay.
Do the tours accommodate vegetarian or gluten-free diets?
Vegetarian-Friendly Tours but vegan, gluten-free, or kosher options may be limited. Please share dietary restrictions upon booking for best accommodation. What should I wear?
There is no dress code on our tours, however it’s recommended to wear a good pair of shoes (these are walking tours, after all!) and be prepared for the elements, even though most of our stops are indoors.
Are tourists welcome in Amsterdam?
Yes, absolutely. There’s a Dutch word, gezellig, which roughly translates to a feeling of cosiness, conviviality, and warmth. That’s the feeling we believe every visitor should experience in Amsterdam.
You’ll find that spirit of gezelligheid from locals when you connect with the city respectfully. It’s found when you support the small, family-run shops in the Jordaan, help keep the canalside quiet at night, and learn the simple rhythm of the bike lanes. This is the authentic Amsterdam experience.
It’s this connection we create on our Eating Europe tours. We step away from the crowds and take you to the places locals truly love, introducing you to the people behind the food and the stories that make this city one of a kind.
Tour Experience & Expectations
Will the guide speak my language?
Our guides are all fluent in English, and of course speak Dutch as well. For requests for tours in other languages, please contact us.
Can I take photos during the tour?
Yes! You are welcome to take photos and videos of the food and scenery throughout your tour. If you would explicitly like to get photos of fellow guests or your guide, we kindly ask that you get their permission first.
Do I need to tip the guide?
Tips for our lovely guides are not required, but they are appreciated!
Will we visit the same places as other tours?
No. While some tours may have one or two stops which other groups visit (can’t help it if they’re popular!), Eating Europe are proud that the majority of stops on every Amsterdam tour are restaurants and vendors who work exclusively with us.
Do you offer private or custom tours?
We do! Please see the “Book a Private Tour” option or contact us, and we can arrange a private or custom Amsterdam tour to suit your specific needs.
